I wish it were simple, but it has been growing and branching out for thousands of years.
Greed is the base of all of our problems, with dependence on fossil fuel being the most necessary fire to put out at this time. After that major and most immediate threat is addressed and procedures are started to retard its advance, we can address others in the order of their importance.
If we all realize that each of our actions actually do have an effect on the entirety of all creation, we can do something. When one thinks that their action will have no effect on anything or anyone else, that is where all problems arise.
If we all actively – today – do just a few things to conserve energy, our efforts will soon be felt by the oil producing nations and it will start to drive the price of fuel down. First we must realize the things we do that cause more use of fossil fuels.
My neighbors in the apartment below me throw their cigarette butts out into the parking spaces. This causes the use of more fuel – really! Just last Saturday, several men with gas driven blowers came around and blew all such trash into the roadway, where a big sweeper truck burned more fuel to collect that. One negative act by many caused a tremendous negative effect. Now our rent must go up to pay for these services and we will each need to work more to earn that money, and in working we will expend more fuel in one way or another. Now imagine this – instead of them throwing their cigarette butt out there, they put them in their garbage can and took a stroll to the dumpster. On the way, they pick up any garbage that might have blown in or was unconsciously discarded in the wrong place. In this case, the men with blowers and the sweeper truck will not be needed…
When you turn on your water, do you know that you are causing the use of more fossil fuel? You certainly are! Even if you own your water well and use an electric pump to deliver the water – that electricity, someplace down the line, caused the use of fossil fuel to be created. Even if it is only the truck that brought in another electric generator that is needed to supply the demand – it causes use of fossil fuel. And what about the fossil fuel used to produce that generator? Think of the machinery to dig out the copper, etc. etc.
Humans amaze me! They work to pay for machines to provide them with more leisure time – an illusion because they have to work more hours to pay for those machines – and when they get more leisure time, they get less exercise and get fat, so they pay to use still more machines – exercise machines to loose the weight they gain from having to exert less physical energy in the performance of their duties… This is a bit of an extreme example, but still quite true. I often dream of making a machine for exercise that produces electricity, which is totally possible.
So, friends of the Universe, please start to do all you can to conserve – everything! And cut a few miles off from your car usage today, and tomorrow and every day. Logically think about it – is that trip necessary, habit, or convenience? Use your automobiles only for the necessary things, and then see if your neighbor might need something from the store and would like to go to the store with you and save some gas while having some company. That is a small version of one of the benefits of community living. Car-pooling does save gas!
According to the inescapable laws of economics, less demand creates lower prices. If we cut our usage of fossil fuels, the price will come down… Then we should seek alternative fuels in earnest and put them to use. Also a car model that uses less fuel – smaller car with smaller engine. Suppress the greed and arrogance a bit to save the Universes.
Now, for the long haul – self-sustaining communities. In general, these communities play a great part in conservation and environmental health. Less food packaging, less food transportation, less transportation in general, better food produced using less chemicals, less need for police, no need for welfare support, no need for public schools, and the benefits are numerous. Many have tied this, to include the Mormons, but few succeed – because the essence is respect of others and the lack of greedy self-serving behavior. These communities benefit from the group effort and they support the group. If countries did this, they would be very strong and without a national debt. Has anyone noticed how huge the U.S. national debt is now? Are they operating efficiently? No – because of greed, unconsciousness and self-service.
I have written much about these communities so I will not repeat it all here. Just understand that this is a way to substantially cut our dependence on foreign oil and thus help our economy recover. Reduce the demand to reduce the cost of fossil fuels and most other costs will fall too. We must realize how much fuel cost effects nearly all prices and if we cut our use of fossil fuels, the prices will fall.
Perhaps someone knows of a way to get some government help – grants, or loans that are flexible to repay – or someone has some land to use, or someone wishes to contribute. If nothing else, please publicize this site and the right sources can connect.
